As SSI instructors at ALPHAMARIN Dive Center, this is probably the question we hear most often from students, even before their first dive: "How deep will we go today?" The short answer we give everyone is: much shallower than you think, and exactly as deep as is safe for your level. Depth isn't a goal in itself — it's a resource you earn gradually, certification by certification, and manage carefully throughout your entire diving career. In this article, we're breaking down depth from an instructor's point of view: the real limits for each certification, what actually happens physiologically to your body the deeper you go, and how we structure that progression, in practice, for our students in the Black Sea.

Why depth is never "just a number"

Every 10 metres (33 feet) you descend adds roughly one extra atmosphere of pressure on your body. In our experience teaching, that single fact is the only thing a beginner really needs to understand at first: it drives almost everything else in diving. Your air consumption increases, your no-decompression time shrinks, your body absorbs more nitrogen, and — past a certain point — nitrogen narcosis starts to blur your judgement and reaction time, sometimes called "the martini effect" because deep divers can start to feel mildly intoxicated for no reason other than the gas they're breathing. We've watched this effect set in on students who seemed perfectly prepared, and recognising it early is part of the training you receive in every course. None of this means diving deep is dangerous by itself. It means depth has to be earned through training, one certification at a time.

Scuba diving depth limits, certification by certification

  • SSI Try Scuba — your very first breath underwater, always side-by-side with an SSI Professional, in shallow, controlled water. No certification required, no minimum experience — just curiosity.

  • SSI Scuba Diver — your first real certification, with supervised dives to 12 metres (40 feet). Enough to see reef life, wrecks in shallow water, and get properly comfortable underwater.

  • SSI Open Water Diver — the world's most popular certification, opening the door to independent dives to 18 metres (60 feet), anywhere in the world.

  • SSI Advanced Open Water Diver — extends your limit to 30 metres (100 feet), while adding skills like navigation and deep diving fundamentals.

  • SSI Deep Diving specialty — the specialty course built specifically for depth, taking you to 40 metres (130 feet), with proper gas management, planning and safety stops built into every dive.

Forty metres is generally considered — and in our own day-to-day practice — the limit for recreational, no-decompression diving. Beyond that, you're in the world of technical diving — different gases, different equipment, entirely different rules, and a completely different approach to training.

What actually happens to your body as you go deeper

Past roughly 30 metres, most of our students start to notice the effects of nitrogen narcosis to some degree — a light-headed, slowed-down feeling that gets stronger the deeper you go. As instructors, this is exactly the point where we watch the closest for signals: a slower response to a hand signal, a slightly distant look. Your regulator also has to work harder to deliver air at higher pressure, which means you'll burn through your tank noticeably faster than in shallow water. And your no-decompression limit — the time you can stay at that depth before needing mandatory safety stops — drops sharply: at 18 metres you might have 45+ minutes, at 40 metres it can fall under 10. How deep can you actually dive in the Black Sea near Constanța?

Locally, our dive site right off ALPHAMARIN Dive Center — a few minutes from the beach next to the Constanța Casino — ranges from an easy few metres for beginners and Try Scuba dives, up to 18–30 metres for certified divers exploring further out. Once you're Deep Diving certified, dives to 40 metres are possible in the Black Sea, revealing a completely different, colder, darker world than the shallow water you started in.

The world's most extreme dive sites

If you want a sense of what's technically possible, well beyond what we do day to day: the wreck of the HMHS Britannic in the Aegean Sea rests at around 120 metres. Dahab's famous Blue Hole in Egypt drops past 100 metres before most divers even reach the arch. Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas plunges beyond 200 metres, and South Africa's Boesmansgat cave system reaches roughly 283 metres. The current world record for the deepest scuba dive belongs to Ahmed Gabr, who reached 332.35 metres in the Red Sea in 2014 — using mixed gases, a decompression schedule lasting over 13 hours, and years of technical training most recreational divers will never need.

Technical diving: a different sport entirely

Past the recreational 40-metre mark, diving stops being about seeing more and starts being about managing risk with extreme precision: multiple gas mixtures for different depths, redundant life-support equipment, mandatory decompression stops that can take longer than the dive itself, and years of progressive training. It's an incredible discipline — but it's built on top of exactly the same foundation every recreational diver starts with, the one we teach from your very first dive.

Equipment that matters more the deeper you go
