Black Sea Scuba Diving in Constanța, Romania: Complete Guide 2025

Why the Black Sea Surprises Every Diver

Scuba diving in the Black Sea at Constanța, Romania defies most people's expectations. No dangerous sharks, no strong currents — instead, you find historically significant wrecks, endemic marine life, and a distinct underwater silence. The Black Sea is one of the most oceanographically unusual bodies of water in the world: low salinity (17‰ vs 35‰ in the Mediterranean), no dangerous species, with strictly local biodiversity.

ALPHAMARIN Dive Center, the only SSI-authorized dive center in Constanța, has been organizing Black Sea guided dives and courses for over a decade. We are located at Bulevardul Regina Elisabeta 5, next to Constanța Casino — minutes from the best dive sites in the area.

Dive Sites Near Constanța

Dobruja Shipwreck — 32 m depth

The Dobruja wreck is the most iconic dive site in Romanian Black Sea waters. An approximately 80-meter vessel that sank in the first half of the 20th century, now fully colonized by mussels and populated by horse mackerel, gobies and crabs. Visibility reaches 10–12 m in season. Requires Advanced Open Water Diver certification or equivalent.

Rocky Reefs 3–18 m

The rocky formations off Constanța's coast are perfect for divers of all levels. At 5–8 m: dense goby schools, flounder camouflaged in sand, thick mussel colonies. At 15–18 m: sea bass, stingrays, spider crabs. These sites are used for both Open Water Diver courses and guided diving trips.

Night Diving

At night, the Black Sea transforms. Phytoplankton bioluminescence lights up every movement. We organize night dives for divers with minimum Open Water Diver certification.

The Black Sea's Unique Characteristics

  • Salinity 17‰ — less buoyancy than the Mediterranean; adapted weight belt
  • No dangerous sharks — the only elasmobranch present is the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), completely harmless
  • Visibility 5–15 m — varies with season and wind; best after calm periods
  • Temperatures — 22–26°C at surface in summer, 10–14°C at 20 m depth
  • Anoxic layer — below 150–200 m water contains no oxygen; all diving is done in the upper oxygenated zone (max 40 m)
